TSLS – The Tropical Society for laser Science for the past nine years TSLS has been contributing to the developing of knowledge and transfer of new ideas encountered in the rapidly growing field of lasers in basic and applied fields. The society supported significantly the efforts of her members, the Egyptian community, specialized and amateurs, in order to clarify the needs of science, education, industry, environment etc… to introduce laser physics in these fields. Here is a look at some of the many TSLS milestone activities reached in that effort.

On January 28, 1986, the Society of Laser science as specialized in the topics of lasers in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering etc. was founded to initiate the importance's of lasers in science at the closing session of the Second Winter School of Laser Physics and Applications, the members of this School, held in collaboration with CNRS of France, decided to start the TSLS with fifty members.

During the opening of the first Laser Physics Laboratory at the Physics dept Faculty of Science Cairo University in February 1987 the same above group gathered to celebrate the anniversary of their first meeting. The laboratory was established through the combined efforts of this groups, the Institute of Plasma Physics at KFA Julich Laboratory of Germany and the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research. The first Workshop on plasma and laser physics was supported by TSLS, IPP of Julich laboratories and Faculty of science, Cairo University.

On March third, the first official meeting was held and steering board of TSLS was elected to be formed of eleven members, where professor Mohamed Abd el-Moksoud El-Nadi initiator of the Laser studies at the physics dept. Cairo University as its president the and Prof. Lotfia El-Nadi as the Vice president imitator and head of laser physics laboratory. The Faculty of Science, Cairo University donated the facilities of hosting TSLS in the laser physics building.

Early December the third Winter School on Laser Physics & Applications was supported by TSLS in collaboration with laser physics laboratory of Cairo University and the University of Suez Canal Faculty of Science, where over 150 members gathered to learn about the frontier of laser physics & its applications specially in enery conversion and telecommunication.

The first issues of volume I and volume 2 of the Journal of laser science and Technology were issued. The TSLS collaborated in organizing the second workshop on Plasma & Laser Physics held by supported of IPP of KFA Julich Laboratories of Germany, Atomic Energy Authority of Egypt and Cairo University.

The newly elected stearling board with professor Lotfia El-Nadi as president started a new strategy of training courses for students from the faculty of science, faculty of Engineering and other working groups in industry. The courses where given in a series of lectures as well as practical laboratory demonstration experiments for laser technology in physics, industry and medicine.

TSLS organized the third workshop on plasma and Laser Physics in collaboration with the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, the IPP of KFA Julich laboratories of Germany and the Suez Canal University held in Ismaielia in February 1992.

TSLS decided to start its first popular journal of laser news as a student 4 page journal. Held several symposia and round table discussion meeting on lasers in industry with the syndicate of Engineers, lasers in Medicine with medical doctors in the fields of laser surgery, cardiology ophthalmology and analysis, lasers in dentistry with the syndicate of dentists.

TSLS collaborated in the first international conference NILES 94 of lasers & applications advances in sciences, medicine and Technology where over 46 distinguished scientists from the top notches in the world gave keynote and invited lectures to over 300 scientists. This was in collaboration with the National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences (NILES).

TSLS published the proceedings of this conference and distributed it to all the participants. It is continuing its activities of seminars, lecture and issuing the Vol. 9 of its journal as well as Laser News in Egypt for students.

Participated in the world congress of the physical societies in Tokyo Japan 18/9/95 Suggested by Academy of Scientific Research.
